Toxic Relationships • noaholiver • 1mo ago

My worst birthday happened because my boyfriend prioritized playing video games over spending time with me.

The title says it all. I got a PlayStation 5 on an installment plan because my boyfriend really wanted one, but he couldn’t afford it due to his credit issues. Wanting to make him happy, I took out the plan in my name. Today is my birthday, and when I got home after studying, I was greeted by our dogs, but not by my boyfriend. He was busy playing games and didn’t even bother to come over and wish me a happy birthday or give me a hug. We hadn’t seen each other all day. I asked him if he could take a moment to come over and pay a bit of attention to me. His response was that he was currently playing. I was so taken aback that I went into another room, lay down, and cried, struggling to comprehend how this could happen. After three hours, he texted me instead of coming to see me, asking, “What’s wrong?” I explained my feelings, but he just brushed them off. I feel terrible. This wasn’t what I expected for my birthday. I’m not sure what to do next.

It’s deeply hurtful when a loved one prioritizes something over quality time on special occasions. You showed kindness by getting him the PS5, but it sounds like he took that for granted. Communication is key—express your feelings clearly. Consider whether this behavior reflects a larger issue in the relationship that needs addressing.
